Service Description
TE'AMIM AND TARGUM: The "original" Torah commentaries According to our tradition, the Ta'amei Hamikra (trop, cantillation notes) and the Targum (the Aramaic translation of the Torah) were given at Sinai together with the Torah itself. The Te'amim are not merely musical notes, and the Targum is not merely an aid for those who did not understand Hebrew; rather, each one constitutes a commentary on the Torah. This course will explore the function of the Te'amim as the punctuation of the Torah, and the function of the Targum as a basic--but profound--commentary on the Torah. Each lesson will contain practical tips for understanding the Te'amim and the Targum, and an exploration of passages in the Torah using the Te'amim and the Targum as commentaries. Recordings will be available for this class. Dates (10 sessions): June 16, 23, 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28, August 4, 11, 18
